It's quiet today down by the lake. A breeze has blown up from the Caribbean inlet engulfing the shallows in an unseasonably pleasant warmth. The turtleducks are taking advantage of the weather to dive for some of the last tasty invertebrates before autumn truly sets in.  From the pier some distance away a small alien watches in silence.

X hesitates for a moment, or maybe two.

Then --

She does not even bother looking around before pulling him over into her lap.

Some things it is better to make sure that no one can see.

It doesn't last very long at all. And oddly enough when he lets go there will be no physical tears soaking her shirt. Never the less there is a very loud sniff preceding an awkward arm pat.

He's fine. Really.

X uncurls from around him very carefully.

Then she returns the arm pat.

It is only fair.

Stitch's ears prick forward, peering out as the afternoon marches on across the grounds. Eventually, minutes or hours from now the two of them will leave the pier. Perhaps there will be food. Or baseball.

But for now there is silence.


Some things are hard to say.
